Ayurvedic principle of hot and cold food

Ayurvedic principles state that every food item in the real world, irrespective of their state of temperature, creates an impact on the mechanism of your body. Hot foods like tomatoes, ginger, onions, mustard, pepper and ghee improve the functioning of the digestive and circulatory system. Cold foods include melons, coconut, asparagus, cauliflower, pumpkin and sweetened fruits provide nourishment and strength to the body. Hotness or coldness of the food is determined by their impact on the body.

According to Ayurveda, hotness or coldness of a food item is measured by their viable impact on the body’s mechanism. There are three types of bodies in Ayurveda namely Vata, Kapha and Pitta, that are highly affected in different ways by hot and cold foods.

People often suffer from the fallacy of hot and cold foods. Common perception states that a food which is cooked hot is considered to be hot and refrigerated food is considered to be cold. But the efficacy of the food is not reliant on the prevailing temperature of the food. Cold foods like ice-cream produce heat within the body despite its low temperature.

Hot foods

Hot foods excite combustion and digestion within our system. They help in making our body and mind feel light. However, burning foods cause vomiting, absolving and even lead to the destruction of semen. Hot foods when consumed in excess quantity leads to gastritis, ulcers and rashes. They boost your appetite and may even increase your voracity of consuming more and more calorie-dense foods. Spicy foods also induce frequent heartburns. Hot foods include cakes or items that are salty, sweet or astringent in taste

Cold foods

Cold foods keep you satiated, strong and sturdy. They help in building the fluid content in your body. However, cold foods make your stomach heavy and they are difficult to be digested and can create an adverse effect on the immune system. Generally, oily and spicy foods are cold ones since they give you a feeling of fullness.

People exhibiting Pitta traits must avoid food items that are fried and spicy. Their regular diet must include essentials like mint, melons, mangoes, cherries, avocados, cucumber smoothies and coconut puddings. People dominant in Pitta should incorporate leafy greens in their salad like dandelions, kale and arugula.


People who are dominant in Vata must focus on warm, cooked and nourishing food that can be easily digested. They should consider including more dairy products in their diet. People experiencing Vata traits should eat vegetables like beans, zucchini, cauliflower and sweet potatoes. Cranberries, plums, rhubarb, nuts, kiwi, grapefruit and bananas are common fruits for people dominant in Vata.


People exhibiting Kapha traits can consume light, spicy and warm foods. Spices like black pepper, cumin, ginger, sesame and turmeric etc constitute an essential part of their diet. Bitter dark green veggies, beans and pulses are beneficial for people with dominant Kapha. Fruits like pears, peaches, figs, pomegranate and apples are perfect for their health.

Consuming the right food in adequate quantity is what prescribed by most dieticians. Proper consumption of foods prevents the occurrence of serious ailments and promote a healthy and active body.
